Cracked Wheat Upma

                    Cracked wheat upma is one of the prominent dish that is made by our mom and is a family favorite. But after I learn to cook , I tried it a couple of times but never got the consistency right. The upma goes either watery or remains uncooked. So i stopped trying this. Recently visited a friend and she made this pulao style cracked wheat upma and I liked it very much. Not only me but my husband and my 3 year old liked it very much too. So I collected the recipe from her and tried it in home and It came out perfect. Now I make this upma atleast once in a week. Easy to make and is very healthy too.

Cracked Wheat Upma

Preparation Time : 5 minutes   | Cooking Time : 15 mins  | Serves : 2
Ingredients :
Ingredients
  • Cracked wheat – 1.5 cup
  • Onion – 1 small, chopped
  • Tomato – 1 chopped
  • Green Chilly – 2 or 3
  • Carrot – 1/2 cup ,chopped
  • Beans – 1/2 cup chopped
  • Green peas – 1/2 cup
  • Ginger – 1 inch piece , finely chopped
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Garam Masala – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt – to taste
  • Water – 3 cups

To temper :

  • Oil – 2 teaspoon
  • Mustard – 1 teaspoon
Method :
1. In a pressure cooker, heat 2 teaspoons of oil . When it is hot ,add mustard and when the mustard splutters, add the chopped onion, ginger and slit green chillies and fry .

2. When the onions turn transparent , add the tomatoes, salt, garam masala powder and turmeric powder and fry.

3. When the tomatoes turn mushy, add the chopped vegetables and fry for a minute.

4.After the vegetables are mixed well, add 3 cups of water and wait it boils. This is the time to check the salt and spicy level. If you want extra spiciness you can add a little red chilly powder according to your taste. When the water starts to boil rapidly , add in the cracked wheat.

5. And stir for a minute and make sure no lumps are formed. Then cover the cooker and cook for 4 whistles in medium flame. After 4 whistles , switch off the flame and wait till the pressure releases.
Serve it hot with coconut chutney or pickle.
